Born from wrestling and judo, sambo is built on throws, leg and arm locks and ground control; combat sambo adds strikes. Grips and leg locks place heavy strain on the knees, ankles, elbows and shoulders, and a throw taken or a lock pushed too far causes dislocations, sprains and fractures. If you are injured in training, in competition or at a seminar, follow these steps.

1. Contact assistance first. Before any medical expense, call the assistance line on your card: its prior agreement is required before any hospitalisation, procedure, medical transport or repatriation.

2. Follow its instructions. Except in a life-threatening emergency, wait for its agreement before incurring costs; it directs you to the most suitable facility and organises your care.

3. Keep all your supporting documents. Initial medical certificate, reports, prescriptions and invoices are essential to process your claim.

Sambo allows leg locks and, in combat sambo, strikes, while judo focuses on throws and hold-downs. Whatever your discipline, we cover sambo as well as judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
