Why is Kendo insurance essential?

Kendo pits two practitioners armed with a bamboo sword (shinai), protected by bogu armour. Despite the protections, strikes delivered at full speed to the head, wrists or body cause bruises, fractures and sprains, especially when a strike gets past the guard. Explosive footwork also strains the knees and ankles. Federation licences and standard contracts cover these accidents poorly, and treatment and rehabilitation costs pile up.

A dedicated personal accident insurance takes over: medical costs, care, rehabilitation and disability are covered according to your plan, at the dojo as in FIK competition. You can then cross swords with a free mind.

If you are injured during training, a grading or a competition, follow these steps.

1. Contact the assistance service first. Before any medical spending, call the assistance line shown on your card: its prior agreement is required before any hospitalisation, procedure, medical transport or repatriation.

2. Follow its instructions. Unless there is a life-threatening emergency, wait for its go-ahead before incurring costs; it directs you to the most suitable facility and arranges your care.

3. Keep every supporting document. Initial medical certificate, reports, prescriptions and invoices are essential to process your claim.

Kendo uses a bamboo shinai with strict etiquette and bogu armour, while sport chanbara uses foam weapons and freer rules. For that discipline, see our sport chanbara insurance.
