Why is mountaineering insurance essential?

Mountaineering exposes you to major altitude and technical risks : rope-team falls, falling rocks/seracs, avalanches, frostbite (sometimes fatal), pulmonary (HAPE) or cerebral (HACE) edema above 3,500 m, extreme cold at 8,000 m peaks, total isolation on walls. Medical repatriation from Himalaya can exceed €100,000. The federation licence covers part but isolated-area evacuations (Karakoram, Patagonia) far exceed caps.
