Winter water, weirs and a long day afloat, with cover in the boat

icon Frais médicaux

Capsizing into December water, care up to €150,000

In December the Exe runs cold and can rise fast after rain. A swim below a weir can mean hypothermia, a dislocated shoulder or a head knocked on a rock. Medical expenses up to €150,000 cover the treatment, hospital stays and surgery that follow the accident.

icon Transport et rapatriement

Carried off a muddy bank and brought home

Exe riverbanks are often slippery and sometimes a long walk from any road. An injured paddler may have to be stretchered across fields before reaching an ambulance. Assistance and repatriation at actual cost take over from there: evacuation, medical transfer and your journey home.

icon Option compétition

Racing a winter descent, and the rest of your paddling season

Many paddlers string together winter descents and marathon races from autumn to spring. The Competition option covers you in official competition, on the Exe Descent and at every other sanctioned race in your season, whatever boat class you paddle.

icon Capital invalidité

Pinned at a weir, a lump sum up to €200,000

A badly judged weir can hold a paddler in its stopper or throw them onto concrete. Spinal injuries, head trauma or a wrecked knee can leave lasting damage. The permanent disability benefit up to €200,000 is paid according to the assessed rate, to help you rebuild daily life.

How a winter Exe catches out the unprepared

Regulars know where the Exe bites, newcomers often do not: weirs taken on the wrong line, rushed portages over slick banks, kit too thin for a December day on the water. Cold slows your hands, fatigue builds over the final stretch, and a late capsize quickly turns into something serious.

All year round, river paddling brings the same hazards: stoppers, submerged branches, cold water, knocks on rocks while launching. AxeoSport's canoe and kayak insurance covers you on white water and flat water, on rivers, lakes and estuaries, training and racing, in the UK and abroad, whatever your country of residence.
