Saturday afternoon, local sports hall. On the bench, a parent frowns: why did the referee blow the whistle, the ball never went out? The rules of basketball<\/strong> take five minutes to grasp and five years to master: between violations, fouls and the gaps between the FIBA and NBA rulebooks, there is plenty of room to get lost. Whether you are starting out at a club or following your children from the stands, here are the essentials, explained without jargon and in the order everyone trips over them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The framework of the game, in four numbers<\/h2>\n\n

Five players per team on court, unlimited substitutions. Four quarters of 10 minutes<\/strong> under FIBA rules, the ones used by every national league, against 12 minutes in the NBA: and the clock stops at every whistle, which explains why a game lasts close to two hours. On scoring: 2 points inside the arc, 3 points beyond<\/strong> the 6.75 metre line, 1 point per free throw. If the scores are level, five minute overtimes follow until somebody wins: there are no draws in basketball.<\/p>\n\n

The violations that shape every beginner’s first season<\/h2>\n\n

These are the “no contact” infringements, the ones that hand the ball back to the opposition.<\/p>\n\n

1. Travelling<\/strong>: more than two steps with the ball in hand without dribbling. It is THE beginner’s nightmare, and the source of 90 % of all sports hall arguments.<\/p>\n\n

2. Double dribble<\/strong>: dribbling, stopping, then dribbling again. Forbidden, always.<\/p>\n\n

3. Backcourt violation<\/strong>: once the halfway line has been crossed in attack, the ball cannot be sent back into your own half.<\/p>\n\n

4. The 3 seconds<\/strong>: no camping for more than 3 seconds in the opponent’s paint.<\/p>\n\n

5. The 24 seconds<\/strong>: every attack must produce a shot touching the rim within 24 seconds, 14 after an offensive rebound. This is the rule that invented modern basketball, fast and spectacular.<\/p>\n\n

6. The 5 seconds<\/strong>: to take a throw in, or to release the ball under defensive pressure.<\/p>\n\n

Personal fouls and free throws, the real user manual<\/h2>\n\n

Illegal contact on an opponent equals a personal foul. After 5 fouls the player is out for good<\/strong>: 6 in the NBA, hence the confusion in front of the television. The subtlety parents discover in the stands is the team foul. From the 5th team foul in the quarter<\/strong> onwards, every new foul gives two free throws, even with no shot involved. A foul on a shooter offers 2 or 3 throws depending on the position, and if the basket goes in despite the contact, it counts along with a bonus throw: the famous “and one” that players celebrate with a clenched fist.<\/p>\n\n

FIBA, NBA, 3×3: why the rules change with the screen<\/h2>\n\n

One source of confusion deserves clearing up: the basketball you watch is not always the basketball you play. The NBA plays 48 minutes in four blocks of twelve<\/strong>, allows 6 fouls and sets its three point line further out. French and international basketball follows FIBA: 40 minutes, 5 fouls. And 3×3, the Olympic discipline booming on playgrounds, changes everything: a single hoop, 10 minutes or 21 points, 1 and 2 points instead of 2 and 3<\/strong>, and 12 seconds per attack. Three codes for one game: always check which one applies before contesting a whistle.<\/p>\n\n

What basketball asks of your ankles<\/h2>\n\n

From the rulebook to the court: basketball is a sport of jumps, landings and violent changes of direction. The outcome is known to every sports hall treatment room: the ankle sprain is the number one injury<\/strong> in the discipline, far ahead of the rest, followed by jammed fingers and knees. Prevention comes down to three habits: a systematic footwork warm up, five minutes of proprioception<\/strong> on one leg every session, and shoes suited to your position and to the surface.<\/p>\n\n

The fourth pillar is administrative, and regular players often discover it after their first serious sprain: the federation licence sets a baseline of cover, and that baseline is capped.
