That is its defining feature: it works even when nobody is to blame:
a solo fall, a bad landing, a hold that breaks, a wave that closes out.

In insurance terms, this is a personal accident guarantee. It steps in on
three fronts that other policies leave open:

Actual medical costs: what remains after your public health scheme and
private health plan have paid: consultation excesses, private rooms, medical equipment,
    physiotherapy.

Search, rescue and repatriation: helicopter evacuation in the mountains,
extraction from a remote site, medical repatriation from abroad. These items run into tens of
thousands of euros and are barely covered by public health systems.

Long-term consequences: a lump sum in the event of permanent disability or
accidental death, meant to offset lost income or fund home adaptation.

Do not confuse it with liability insurance, which covers damage you cause to
a third party: the cyclist you collide with, the skier you bring down, the gym window you break.
The two are complementary, never interchangeable.

Why insure yourself for sport?

Because sports accidents are not rare events. In France alone, the national injury survey
(Epac, Institut de veille sanitaire) counts roughly
910,000 sport and physical-activity accidents a year. Almost one in five leads
to hospitalisation, and one in four to time off work or school.

So the issue is not likelihood, it is the coverage gap. The
unlicensed, independent athlete (the Sunday trail runner, the rider stacking
up MTB outings, the skier off the beaten track, the climber out with two friends) has
no specific accident cover at all.

Personal liability, bundled into a home policy, pays if you injure someone else. But if you
fall alone, there is no one to hold liable and therefore no compensation. That leaves the health
system, which reimburses treatment, not a helicopter bill, not lost income, not a permanent
  disability.

A useful reflex: read the excluded-activities list in
your home insurance terms. You will almost always find a clause ruling out air sports,
motorsport, underwater and combat disciplines, along with any form of competition.

For these out-of-club activities, an individual sports policy taken out for a day, a weekend
or a month is the simplest answer. That is the logic behind
  trail running insurance, ski
insurance or mountain bike insurance: cover starts when you set
  off, and not before.

What if I train in a club or under a federation?

What the club must insure

In most European countries, sports clubs, companies and federations are legally required to
hold civil liability cover for their activity, protecting the organisation, its
staff and volunteers, and its members. In France, this is set out in article L321-1 of the
Code du sport. So your club is insured for liability, and you are covered through it
  during supervised sessions.

What the club only has to offer you

Personal injury is a different matter. French law (article L321-4 of the Code du sport)
requires federations and clubs to inform members of the value of personal accident
cover and to offer at least one policy. The verb matters: offer, not
provide. Signing up remains voluntary, and many members tick “I decline” without
realising what they are turning down.

The limits of licence-included cover

Where accident cover is genuinely included in a licence, three checks are worth making:

The limits. A disability lump sum of a few thousand euros does not replace
a lost career. Compare it against a dedicated policy.

The scope. A licence covers the licensed discipline within federation
activities. A personal outing, cross-training or a training camp abroad may fall outside.

Rescue costs. Rarely covered at actual cost, even though mountain
helicopter rescue routinely runs into several thousand euros.

Many licensed athletes therefore take out individual sports insurance in addition
to their licence, not instead of it.

Which insurance for high-risk sports?

This is the breaking point. As soon as your discipline steps outside “mainstream” sport,
generalist policies close their doors. That typically includes:

Motorsport: motocross, karting, quad
    biking, rally, downhill MTB.

Air sports: skydiving, paragliding,
    wingsuit, aerobatics.

Mountain sports: mountaineering, climbing,
    ski touring, ice climbing.

Underwater sports: scuba diving, freediving, caving.

Combat sports: boxing, MMA, martial arts
where a knockout can end the bout.

Two mistakes come up again and again. First, assuming travel insurance or credit-card cover
will take over abroad: these explicitly exclude such activities. Second, assuming
competition is covered like training. It almost always requires a separate
  extension.

A specialist individual sports policy settles both points, provided you check three lines in
the schedule: the named discipline, competition use where
  relevant, and the geographical area.

Medical certificates: what changed in France in 2022

If you play in France, note that Law no. 2022-296 of 2 March 2022 substantially
  relaxed pre-participation medical screening:

Minors no longer need a certificate; a completed
health questionnaire is enough, unless one answer is positive, in which case
    a medical consultation is required.

Adults no longer need a certificate to obtain or renew a licence at
national level. Each federation’s medical commission may still require one.

Disciplines with specific constraints (article D231-1-5 of the
Code du sport) still require a certificate less than a year old. These include scuba
diving, combat sports allowing a knockout, disciplines using firearms or air weapons,
competitive motorsport, disciplines using an aircraft, mountaineering, caving and rugby.

Do not conflate the two subjects: not needing a certificate does not mean
you are insured, and holding insurance does not exempt you from a certificate where the discipline
requires it. Always check your federation’s rules for the current season.

How to choose your individual sports insurance

Six criteria are enough to separate the offers. Work through them in this order:

Is your sport named? An explicit list beats a vague “recreational sporting
    activities” formula.

What are the real limits? Look at medical expenses, the disability lump
sum and search-and-rescue costs, not just the price.

Is repatriation covered at actual cost? A low cap on this item makes the
guarantee theoretical as soon as the accident happens far from home.

Is competition included or optional? If you will pin on a race number this
year, this is not a detail.

What duration? Daily cover for a race, annual cover for regular practice.
Paying twelve months for three outings makes no sense.

Which territory? France, Europe or worldwide, and which countries are
    excluded.

AXEOSPORT individual sports insurance

AXEOSPORT is a personal accident policy designed exclusively for sport, on a
simple principle: insuring what others exclude. Clubs and federations, however, are required to make you
aware of it and to offer a policy: in France, under article L321-4 of the Code du sport.
Only the club’s civil liability cover is compulsory.

Isn’t my federation licence enough?

It is a starting point, rarely a complete answer. Accident cover bundled into a licence
usually carries modest limits, is restricted to the licensed discipline, and handles rescue and
repatriation costs poorly. An individual policy takes over on those three points.

Does my home insurance cover sports injuries?

No. The personal liability cover in a home policy pays for damage you cause to others, not for
injuries you suffer. It also tends to exclude high-risk sports and competition.

Will my health plan reimburse a sports accident?

It reimburses treatment eligible under your health scheme, within its own limits. It does not
pay a disability lump sum, does not fund a helicopter evacuation and does not replace lost
  income.

Can I insure myself for a single day?

Yes. Individual sports insurance can be taken out for a day, a weekend, a trip or a full year,
which fits a one-off race, raid or training camp.

Are high-risk sports insurable?

Yes, through a specialist policy. Motorsport, air sports, underwater and combat disciplines
are excluded from most generalist contracts but fall within the scope of insurance dedicated to
  sport.

Am I covered abroad?

It depends on the territory you select (France, Europe or worldwide) and on the excluded
zones. Countries in conflict are excluded as a rule.

Go further

Our sports insurance plans

The 400+ sports we cover

All your questions about sports insurance

Insuring the members of a club or association

Tailored cover for a sports event

You run, you climb, you ride, you dive.
