Then the hulls changed. Coastal rowing arrived with wide, self bailing boats built for choppy water, and the whole shoreline became a playground. The result: the discipline recruiting fastest in French clubs, the atmosphere of open sea wanderers, and Olympic recognition through the beach sprint. Here is the tour of a quiet revolution that smells of sea spray.

What changes when the oar goes to sea

The boats first: sea yoles and coastal solos, wider and unsinkable, at ease in 50 centimetres of chop that would nail a river single scull to the pontoon. Then the terrain: the coast, its waves, its currents, its wind. Every outing is different, and the perfect run of smooth water gives way to something else: reading the sea, surfing a swell on the way home, landing in a deserted cove. The technique is still the same legs, back, arms chain, the one set out in our guide to rowing machine technique, but it adapts constantly: shorter strokes in the chop, crew timing that matters even more.

Three practices for three temperaments

Coastal touring, the way in

Outings of 10 to 25 kilometres as a crew, a picnic in a rocky inlet, the run home with the wind behind: touring by oar follows the coast the way others walk long distance trails. It is the practice that is exploding, open to you after two or three introductory sessions thanks to the stability of the boats.

Offshore racing, endurance in the chop

Championships over 4 to 8 kilometres in open sea, with buoy turns and wave reading: the endurance event of rowers, spectacular and tactical.

The beach sprint, the Olympic format

A running start on the beach, a 250 metre sprint at sea with a slalom, then a sprint back across the sand: short, intense, made for television. The format chosen for the Games, and the best show rowing has ever offered the general public.

Getting started: even simpler than classic rowing

The stability of sea hulls shortens everything. Where the river single scull demands weeks of balance work, the sea yole lets you join a supervised tour within the first fortnight. Coastal clubs on the Atlantic seaboard, the Mediterranean and in Brittany offer taster sessions and beginners’ courses, often all summer long. Requirements: swim 50 metres and accept that you will finish covered in salt. Budget: 200 to 350 euros a year, club boats included, the price of a gym membership for a sport that hands you the coast on your own timetable.

The sea gives the orders, and that is the rule of the game

Coastal rowing inherited its safety culture from sailing, and that culture shapes every outing. The weather decides: wind AND swell checked before rigging, outing cancelled without hesitation above the club thresholds. The navigation area is defined in advance, lifejackets are on board, and coaches follow in a motorboat on group outings. The medical specifics of the discipline come down to three points: the hands, a local speciality between salt and blisters, where preventive taping is a piece of club craftsmanship: the lower back, worked harder in chop than on flat water: and exposure, sun, cold, capsize, which never forgives improvisation.

That last register explains the reflex of regular sea rowers: a personal accident insurance for rowing alongside the licence, built for assistance in a maritime environment and real treatment costs. The sea remains the sea, even under oar, and serious crews are recognised as much by their taping as by their cover, which an online quotation sorts out faster than rigging a boat.

Dressing for the open water, a rig of its own

One equipment detail specific to coastal rowing completes the picture: clothing. Forget the lycra one piece of the basins: the sea rower dresses in technical layers like a kayaker, nautical windbreaker and glasses held on a cord, with waterproof sun cream in summer and thin gloves in mid season. The dry bag clipped under the seat, with water, bars and a phone, is part of the standard rig: a three hour tour is a small voyage, and it is prepared as such.

River rowing and coastal rowing

Criterion

River boat

Sea boat

Hull

Fine and fast

Wide and stable

Water

Calm and sheltered

Open sea, waves

Stability

Low, technically demanding

High, accessible

Race format

Timed straight line

Long distance with buoys

Following

Racers and clubs

Leisure and discovery

The finest gym has a view of the coast

Rowing at daybreak along the cliffs, surfing a swell on the way home, landing eight strong on a beach you cannot reach on foot: coastal rowing combines the physical demands of rowing with the call of the open sea borrowed from sailing, without the budget of a yacht. Coastal clubs are full and looking for arms all year round. Come aboard at the next open day: the coast never gives itself up better than at oar height, and it lies less than an hour from half the country.

For a century, rowing was a flat water sport: smooth rivers, calibrated basins, cathedral silence.
