The answer almost always lands in the same place. The rowing sport engages around 85% of the body’s muscle mass on every stroke, without the slightest impact on the joints. On paper, it is the perfect machine. On the water, it adds what no gym will ever offer: the run of the boat, the balance, the silence of a river at first light. Here is why this low profile sport is worth the detour, and how to take it up in practice.

What rowing really does to the body

First myth to correct: you do not row with your arms. A rowing stroke is 60% legs, 30% back and trunk, and only 10% arms. The thighs drive, the body swings, the arms finish: that chain explains why rowers post some of the highest VO2 max figures in world sport, ahead of many runners.

The second asset is the one physiotherapists care about: zero impact. Seated, carried by the water, the body works without trauma. Rowing can be practised very late in life, it is the ideal complement for injured runners, and the back strength it builds corrects years of desk posture, provided the movement is properly learned. Add 500 to 700 kcal for an hour of steady rowing: the cardio follows.

The slide, the movement that gets you hooked

The seat rolls on rails, and the whole apprenticeship comes down to one sequence: legs, body, arms on the drive, then arms, body, legs on the recovery. Clubs sum it up in a formula beginners repeat on a loop: “legs, back, arms, arms, back, legs”. A disordered stroke tires the lower back. A correct stroke produces the sensation rowers call perfect run: the boat gliding between two strokes, silent, as though launched across glass. That is what fills the pontoons on a Saturday morning.

Starting at a club, the real path

1. The taster session: every rowing club offers one, often free, in stable training boats or a coxed quad for four. Nobody will put you in a fragile single scull on day one.

2. The beginners’ course: 8 to 10 sessions to acquire the slide, the manoeuvres and the safety drills. Budget 200 to 350 euros a year at a club, licence included and club boats provided: one of the best equipment to price ratios in French sport.

3. The swimming test: swim 25 to 50 metres, asked for when you sign up. Rowing takes place on water, and the basics remain the basics.

4. Then take your pick: long crew boats for the team spirit, the single scull for solitary types, recreational rowing, touring or racing. In winter the ergometer keeps you in shape, and clubs run their own timed challenges on it, an exercise detailed in our guide to rowing machine technique.

Why the timing has never been better

Rowing remains a discreet sport in the French landscape, squeezed between higher profile disciplines: one look at the sports list is enough to gauge the competition. Yet it is one of the rare sports where an adult beginner can row in a settled crew from their very first season.

One final argument, the calendar one: unlike saturated summer sports, rowing clubs recruit all year round and waiting lists are rare. The September open days remain the best moment, the water is still warm and the beginners’ courses start in groups.

The rower’s precautions, without the drama

Rowing injures little, but it wears you down quietly when the movement or the volume slips. The lower back first: a badly sequenced slide, a rounded back at the catch, and lumbar pain settles in: that is THE reason to start under supervision. Then the hands: blisters guaranteed for the first few weeks, and preventive taping is a club art that is quickly learned. The wrists and the ribs last, among competitors putting in big mileage.

On top of that comes the dimension specific to water sports: capsizing a single scull in water at 10 degrees is never a trivial matter, and clubs supervise winter outings strictly. That reality is what pushes committed rowers to complete their federation licence with a personal accident insurance for rowing: it takes over on real treatment costs and assistance, from the physiotherapy room to the mishap on the riverbank. In a sport where you buy little equipment, that is the budget line that remains.

What rowing works

Body area

Share of the effort

Role in the rowing stroke

Legs

The largest share

Initial drive against the footplate

Trunk and core

Substantial

Transmitting force, swinging the body

Arms and back

Complementary

Finishing the movement

Cardiovascular system

Heavily taxed

Long, continuous effort

Eight oars, a single run

There are two kinds of rowing: the one on gym machines, effective and a little austere, and the one on open water at daybreak, where eight rowers in perfect time make sixty kilos of carbon fly through the mist. The second is worth the trip. Book a taster session this September: the perfect run has to be earned, but you can taste it within the first month. And you never unlearn it.

Ask any strength and conditioning coach: which sport works the most muscle with the least trauma?
